A Big Machine On A Tightrope
When I began using HPLC-ECD systems during graduate school, my supervisor instructed me on the many things Not To Do. The reason at the time was that HPLC-ECD systems were delicate and balanced. Its conditions should not be changed. It felt like I was walking on a tightrope with my research. Then I joined Eicom and was involved in marketing overseas. During demos of the previous model HPLC system in foreign counties, it sometimes took up to two days to demonstrate the superior sensitivity to our clients. After shipping, the system sometimes lost its stability. The system was too intricate and complicated to quickly diagnose the actual problems. We simply needed to wait and eventually the system would equilibrate and begin working correctly again. Thus, we decided to change from a component based system to an all-in-one packaging with a simple system configuration to make our lives easier and it turned out to make our customers' lives easier as well.
All-In-One With A Small Footprint Japan is a small country. Eicom’s customers in our homeland have always had the problem of limited space. We found the situation to be the same within the US and Europe. A common sentiment of our user the first time they see our system is, “Is this a complete HPLC-ECD system? It is so compact!” The HTEC-500 users are always pleasantly surprised with the small footprint. The HTEC-500 includes an online degasser (only 300 µl volume), HPLC pump (no pulsation damper), manual injector, column temperature controller (both cooling and heating), and electrochemical detector cell within a single package the size of a typical desktop computer sold in the US. The trimmed HPLC-ECD did not sacrifice anything in order to combine the latest technology into this concise unit which has enhanced stability.
